Scrap Car Paperwork in BC: What to Confirm Before Pickup
Prepare the ownership documents, vehicle details and handover records before your unwanted car leaves the property.

Request a Vehicle Offer
Tell us early if ownership paperwork is missing or unusual.
A parked vehicle is not automatically yours to dispose of
Before arranging pickup, establish that you are the registered owner or have authority to complete the transaction. Vehicle condition and ownership are separate questions—even a damaged or non-running vehicle needs an appropriate handover process.
Our team can discuss the vehicle, condition and pickup request. That conversation does not replace ICBC requirements, an Autoplan broker’s assessment or legal advice for a complicated ownership situation.
Four things to settle before the booking
Accurate information lets the ownership and pickup questions be addressed before a driver is scheduled.
Identify the vehicle
Prepare the year, make, model and VIN if accessible. Confirm the VIN matches the available registration records.
Explain your role
State whether you are the registered owner or are acting for a company, family member, estate or another authorized party.
Flag unresolved issues
Mention missing registration, an active claim, finance, lien, estate matter or any uncertainty about authority to sell.
Describe pickup access
Share the address, vehicle position, keys, wheel condition, clearance limits, gates, slopes and property permissions.
Keep the documents secure while you confirm what applies
You do not need to publish sensitive records with a first enquiry. Start by explaining what you have and ask how the required checks will be handled.
| Information | Why it matters | Good practice |
|---|---|---|
| Vehicle registration | Helps establish the registered owner and vehicle record | Keep the original secure; present it through the agreed process |
| Transfer/Tax form | Used for an ordinary ownership transfer in BC | Complete the applicable form fully with original signatures |
| Vehicle identification number | Connects the physical vehicle with the documents | Check the VIN on the vehicle against available records |
| Seller’s identity and authority | Shows who can sign or authorize the transaction | Explain whether you are the owner or acting for someone else |
| Offer and pickup record | Captures the amount, conditions, access and handover terms | Keep messages, agreed terms and the completed transaction record |
| Plates and insurance plan | Pickup alone may not complete every administrative step | Ask an Autoplan broker about removing plates and cancelling or transferring insurance |
Use the correct route when an ordinary sale does not fit
Tell the buyer what remains unresolved and obtain the appropriate guidance before pickup.
Missing registration
ICBC has a separate process for vehicles without documentation. The required steps depend on how you obtained the vehicle and what evidence is available.
Owner has passed away
An estate transfer can require specific original or certified documents and an authorized person to sign. Being a relative or holding the keys does not by itself establish signing authority.
Claim, loan or lien
Confirm unresolved interests with the lender, insurer, claim handler, broker or adviser involved. ICBC cautions that changing ownership during an active claim can affect the claim.
A simple handover sequence
Reconfirm anything that changed after the original offer or booking.
Match the booking
Confirm the vehicle, address, seller and access details match the agreed pickup.
Prepare documents
Have the applicable records ready for the appropriate person to complete.
Clear the vehicle
Remove belongings, personal documents, garage openers and saved personal data.
Retain your record
Keep the agreed offer, payment details and completed handover documentation.
Answers before you arrange collection
Does a non-running car still need an ownership check?
Yes. A vehicle’s mechanical condition and your authority to sell it are separate matters. Confirm the registered ownership and ask an Autoplan broker which documents apply before collection.
Can a property owner sell a vehicle left on the property?
Do not assume so. The vehicle’s location does not establish ownership or disposal authority. An abandoned vehicle may require a different official or legal process.
Should I send identification with my first quote request?
Start with the vehicle, condition, location and access details. Ask how any required identification or ownership check will be handled, and do not post sensitive documents in public comments, reviews or photographs.
Can I request an offer while documents are being resolved?
You can describe the vehicle and explain what remains unresolved. An offer discussion does not mean a pickup can proceed before the appropriate ownership and document checks are complete.
Have the vehicle details ready?
Tell us what you have, where it is parked and whether any ownership issue still needs to be resolved. We will explain the vehicle and pickup information needed for the next step.
